HeART and Soul – May 6, 2018
Sometimes words can’t do the job. Two SFX parishioners, Peg Hornsby and Nancy Seibolt, both recent grads of the Ignatian Spirituality Center “Prayer Companions” certificate program, are offering a once-a-month experience of faith sharing and exploration that has nothing to do with reading and discussing theology or spirituality or “hot button” church issues. The two-hour sessions are about taking a break from “discursive mind” and allowing the soul and spirit to express itself through the visual arts.
Are you thinking, “that’s not for me…I’m not very creative…I was never good at art in school”? It doesn’t matter. The only “requirement” is to have a soul and a spirit – and I know you do.
The Scriptural foundation of this undertaking is Jesus’ promise to send the Holy Spirit found in the Gospel of John 14:20 –“on that day you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you.”
Call it divine indwelling, the True Self, or the god-spark – God-who-is-Love is within us, each of us, all of us. And art is one way to discover and express that.
The first thing we learn about God is God is creator. A maker. The first story in the first book of our Sacred Scriptures is the creation story. Light and darkness. Earth and sky and sea. Sun and moon and stars. Plants and seed and fruit. Fish and birds and land animals. And us. Scientists tell us modern humans (homo sapiens) first walked the earth some 500,000 years ago. Homo erectus and homo habilis came much earlier (two million years earlier!). Imagine all those ancestors sharing their souls!
During the first HeART and Soul gathering (a standing room only crowd in our Romero Room!) the group made paper collages. One participant found me in my office later that day to show me her creation with excitement and joy and peace.
Do you want excitement, joy and peace? The next HeART and Soul is Tuesday, June 5, 11:00 am-1:00 pm. Join us! There is no fee. All materials are provided. And if you want to show me what you made, I promise I will find it “very good.
