Sabbath

Sabbath

The last week of June and the first week of July I’ll be on vacation: The Arkansas Adventure. That’s what Charlie and I are calling our trip to Hot Springs, Little Rock and Fort Smith. We always enjoy visiting National Park sites so on our way down to Arkansas we’ll stop in Springfield, Missouri and visit Wilson’s Creek Battlefield (a Civil War site). While in Arkansas we’ll spend some time at the National Park in Hot Springs and visit Central High School National Historic Site in Little Rock (where in 1957 nine brave young African-Americans made history by enrolling in the previously all-white high school). On our way back home we’ll stop at Fort Smith, another National Historic Site that chronicles the history of 19th Century America – Indians and outlaws and the Trail of Tears and all.

Summer is a quiet time in the faith formation business. It’s a time for putting away materials, filing records, planning for the year to come. And it’s a time for Sabbath. For rest and recreation. Or, better put, rest that is re-creation. Charlie and I are blessed that we both have jobs that we love (he’s a college math professor). But it’s easy for both of us to work too much and play (and pray) too little. During the school year there are days (weeks!) that we barely have time together. Summer’s slower work pace and a two week vacation give us the chance to do what the Creator did on the Seventh Day: rest. And read. And learn. And enjoy God’s creation.

AND. I’ve got the names and address of the two Catholic churches in Hot Springs (www.masstimes.org/). We always attend mass when we’re on vacation. It’s fun and interesting to see how other churches celebrate the liturgy. I’ll give you a report!

Peace

Mariann
